Ten gigabytes spread across five video files is a much smaller job than two gigabytes spread across two thousand small documents, because every file has to be found, rebuilt and verified individually. That is why the price comes after the assessment rather than before it.

A reasonably new drive is always the safer choice. Recovered files are never written back onto the device they were extracted from, because that device may still be failing and copying onto it would destroy what has just been recovered. How your files are handed back, and what happens to the working copy afterwards, is talked through and agreed with you before any work starts.
