What “connected but no internet” means

This message usually means the computer or phone has connected to the Wi-Fi router, but the router is not successfully reaching the internet. The Wi-Fi signal and the internet service are related, but they are not the same thing. You can have strong Wi-Fi bars and still have no working internet.

The cause may be the modem, router, internet provider outage, DNS problem, damaged cable, weak signal, incorrect network settings, security software or a fault affecting only one device.

Safe checks you can try first

  • Check whether other devices have internet on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Restart the modem/router by switching it off for about one minute, then turning it back on.
  • Check that all modem/router cables are firmly connected.
  • Move closer to the router to rule out weak signal.
  • Forget and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network if only one device is affected.
  • Avoid factory resetting the router unless you have the login and setup details.

Home and small business differences

At home, the issue is often signal strength, router age, NBN equipment, device settings or too many devices using the connection. In a small business, the impact can be bigger because EFTPOS, email, cloud apps, printers, cameras and staff computers may all depend on the same network.

A quick fix may restore internet temporarily, but repeated dropouts usually need a proper check of router placement, cabling, Wi-Fi interference and device configuration.

When to get help

  • Internet drops out several times a day.
  • Only one computer cannot connect but others are fine.
  • The Wi-Fi password works on some devices but not others.
  • The router lights show a fault or the modem keeps restarting.
  • Business devices such as printers, POS systems or shared folders stop working after network changes.

How OCT can help

OCT can check the computer, Wi-Fi connection, router basics, Windows network settings and small office device setup. If the issue appears to be with the internet provider or NBN equipment, you can be advised what to report and what information to give them.

Common Questions

Is Wi-Fi the same as internet?

No. Wi-Fi connects your device to the router. The router still needs a working internet service.

Should I reset my router?

Restarting is safe. Factory resetting can remove settings and should be avoided unless you know how to reconfigure it.

Can old routers cause dropouts?

Yes. Old or poorly placed routers can cause weak signal, slow speeds and unreliable connections.

Can you help a small office network?

Yes. OCT can help with practical small office Wi-Fi and computer connectivity issues.
