What diagnosis means

Diagnosis is the process of finding the likely cause of a computer problem before deciding on the repair. It may involve asking about symptoms, checking power, startup behaviour, Windows errors, storage health, malware symptoms, network settings, overheating, hardware condition and recent changes.

The $50 diagnosis fee covers the visit, fault finding and troubleshooting. It applies whether or not you proceed with a repair because the time and travel are still required to inspect the issue and explain options.

Why a simple symptom can need detailed checking

A customer may say “keyboard not working”, “computer slow” or “Wi-Fi not working”, but the cause can be very different. A keyboard issue may be a loose cable, damaged keyboard, liquid damage, Windows driver fault, motherboard issue or external device conflict. A slow computer may be malware, hard drive failure, low memory or overheating.

Sometimes a fault is fixed during diagnosis because the act of testing reveals and resolves the cause. The diagnosis still has value because the device had to be inspected and the cause found.

What is usually checked

  • What changed before the problem started.
  • Whether the issue is hardware, software, network or account related.
  • Error messages, warning lights and startup behaviour.
  • Basic health of storage, Windows and security where relevant.
  • Whether important files need backup before repair.
  • Whether parts, data work or longer off-site testing may be needed.

Approval before extra work

If the issue requires parts, large backup, data recovery, migration, complex Windows repair or longer business work, the additional cost is explained before proceeding. No extra work or charges should surprise the customer. If time-consuming off-site work is needed for the same device, pickup and drop-off are included within the same service with no extra attendance charge.

How to prepare for diagnosis

  • Have your charger available for laptops.
  • Write down passwords only if you are comfortable and they are needed for testing.
  • Mention if files are not backed up.
  • Explain what happened before the issue started.
  • Show photos of errors or scam messages if you have them.
  • Tell the technician if the device has liquid damage, drops or previous repair attempts.
