The repair or replace decision

The best choice depends on age, condition, performance, parts cost, data importance and what the computer is used for. A cheap repair may be worthwhile on a suitable computer, while an expensive repair on an old or low-spec device may not be sensible.

The goal is not to repair everything at any cost. The goal is to find the fault, explain the options and help you avoid wasting money.

Repair may make sense when

  • The computer is generally reliable but has one clear fault.
  • The device has a good processor and only needs an SSD or memory upgrade.
  • The screen, battery or keyboard can be replaced at a sensible cost.
  • Important software or business setup would be inconvenient to move.
  • The repair cost is much lower than a suitable replacement.

Replacement may be better when

  • The computer is very old and slow even after basic maintenance.
  • Multiple parts are failing.
  • The repair cost is close to replacement cost.
  • The device cannot run required software safely or smoothly.
  • The battery, screen, keyboard and storage all need attention.
  • Business downtime is costing more than replacement.

Do not forget data transfer

Even when replacing a computer, data transfer, email setup, browser bookmarks, printer setup, software installation and backup setup still need planning. A replacement computer is not automatically ready for daily use until these items are handled.

How OCT can help

OCT can inspect the device, explain likely repair costs, discuss upgrade value and help with data transfer or setup if replacement is the better choice. If a repair is not sensible, you will be told clearly.

How Our Pricing Works

The diagnosis fee applies whether or not you proceed with the repair because it covers travel, fault finding and troubleshooting. Time-consuming jobs may be completed off site, with pickup and drop-off included when needed for the same device.

Common Questions

Yes. The diagnosis fee covers travel, fault finding and advice even if you decide not to repair.

Is an SSD upgrade better than buying new?

Sometimes. It depends on the age and specifications of the computer.

Can you transfer files to a new computer?

Yes, where the old storage is readable and the files are accessible.

Will you tell me if repair is not worth it?
