What fake virus warnings look like

Fake virus warnings often appear suddenly in a browser and claim your computer is infected, locked, monitored or about to lose files. They may use loud sounds, flashing messages, countdown timers or fake Microsoft-style wording. The goal is usually to make you panic and call a number, install remote access software or pay money.

A real security warning should not pressure you to call an unknown number from a web page. If the warning is inside Chrome, Edge or another browser tab, it may be a scam page rather than a real system alert.

What to do immediately

  • Do not call the number shown on the pop-up.
  • Do not click download, allow, scan, renew or support buttons.
  • Do not give remote access to anyone who contacted you through a pop-up.
  • Close the browser tab if possible. If it will not close, restart the computer.
  • Disconnect from the internet if someone is already connected remotely.
  • If you paid money or shared banking details, contact your bank quickly.

After the pop-up is closed

After closing the warning, the browser may still be affected by notifications, unwanted extensions, changed search settings or malicious pages reopening. Some fake alerts are only web pages, while others are linked to adware or browser hijackers already installed on the computer.

If you allowed notifications, installed software, called the number, or gave remote access, the computer should be checked properly. Passwords may also need to be changed from a clean device.

Common Questions

Is the pop-up definitely a virus?

Not always. Some are scam web pages, but they can still lead to malware or remote access risk if clicked.

What if I called the number?

Stop contact, do not pay more money, disconnect remote access if present and have the computer checked.

Should I change passwords?

Yes, especially if someone remotely accessed the computer or you typed passwords while the warning was active.

Can you remove the pop-ups?

Yes. OCT can check the browser, installed programs, startup items and malware symptoms.
